Dit schilderij is gemaakt voor het idee van OP3N ontstond. Maar het is me gelukt om toch nog het een en ander over de opbouw van dit werk te vertellen. Het begon met een handgemaakt houten paneel op een frame met een ‘scattered base’ in wit. Ik wist niet zo goed hoe te beginnen, vandaar dat ik terug ging naar mijn graffiti verleden. Ik dacht bij me zelf ‘de inspiratie komt zelfs niet als ik een mooi paneel voor me zelf heb gemaakt’ daardoor ontstond de tekst ‘When even that doesn’t work’. Terwijl ik met het tekenen van de tekst bezig was, ontstond het idee van terug gaan naar de basis van creatie of scheppen. De dingen die essentieel zijn bij het scheppen zijn; perfectie, schoonheid & lol hebben in het creëeren. Als deze elementen niet aanwezig zijn kan je net zo goed stoppen met wat je doet, tenzij je er betaald voor krijgt!
Ik verbaasde me er eigenlijk over dat iedereen deze wijsheid als kind al in zich had, maar dat sommige mensen dit vergeten zijn gedurende het volwassen worden. Ik keek hierdoor eens terug naar mijn eigen leven en creaties en stond stil bij mijn tijd op de kunst academie in Utrecht (HKU). Daar liep ik tegen de volgende reactie op: ‘je werk ziet er leuk uit maar mist volwassenheid’. Het heeft me heel wat gekost (waaronder het stoppen met die opleiding) om er achter te komen of dit iets goeds was of juist niet. Bijna 7 jaar later heeft het een antwoord gekregen in dit schilderij. Waarbij ik stil sta bij de verwondering van een kind. Een kind dat schaamteloos zonder terug gefloten te worden kan genieten van een schepping. Vandaar het afro-jongetje dat ademloos geniet van het vliegen van de vogel. Wat het jongetje later zelf is gaan doen laat ik over aan jouw verbeelding.

I started of with this painting before I came up with the idea of collecting stages of the painting process. But I managed to give a view of the techniques and discissions based on the final artwork. It began with a wooden panel and a white scatteringbase. I did’nt knew what to do with it so I went back to my graffiti roots and put op the text ‘When even that doesn’t work’. I used this because it was exactly what I felt like at the moment. I made a good base but there was’nt an idea to start with. It felt like I was dishonouring the panel with not working with it. So if a good base is’nt working as an inspiration what is? But while illustrating the text it came to me that going back to the essentials of creating, the things in mind while creating are: perfection, beauty and fun. When these three things are missing there is no reason in making anything unless you’re getting paid for it. The thing is that all the people in the world are aware of this. Since they were all kids once. As a baby boy or girl you were discovering you’re surroundings and had a lot of fun exploring. As we grow-up, we forget about the already created beauty around us, because other things are blocking our view. With this in mind, I looked into my older works and saw that I always had a young and child-minded view on things. This was also a learning point while I was stil on the arts academy (HKU-Utrecht). Had something to do with growing up. But a couple of years older and a lot of experience richer, I managed to give it a new face. So I airbrushed a young afro-boy who is enjoying the view of a bird humming thru the air. The result is a view on how to enjoy your surroundings.
